Diversity in Education

My Educational Philosophy:

“Diversity in education is necessary and should reflect the diversity of the real world and thus give our students a true world view of global diversity. It is as simple as saying, we all need one another or iron sharpens iron. Our giftedness, knowledge, talent and skills reach their highest potential when we learn to respect and value the giftedness, knowledge, talent and skills of others while learning. I believe that equity and cultural diversity must be integrated into all dimensions of our school learning community in order for students to broaden their learning through inquiry, research and authentic productivity.”

Well said! School learning communities are not just environments in which students should learn math, writing, and reading. There are other subjects that students should be taught as well, only those are the things that can only be learned through interaction with other students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. That is why the re-segregation of schools bothers me. Students today are being deprived of one of the most important learning experiences, which is knowing how to respect and sympathize with others who are different and thus learning how to be a member of a realistically diverse society.

Thank you very much for bringing attention to the issue of diversity (or lack thereof) in our schools through this post!
